Sustainable Products and Actions: Shaping the Licensing Industry

The global licensing industry is facing a critical turning point. As environmental concerns grow and consumer expectations change, sustainability has shifted from a corporate buzzword to a business necessity. The Products of Change (POC) Conference tomorrow, November 5th, in London brings together industry leaders to address this vital shift and demonstrate how sustainable practices are transforming brand strategies worldwide.

THE BUSINESS CASE FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability in licensing goes beyond just compliance—it signifies a fundamental rethinking of product development, manufacturing, and distribution. Three main forces drive this shift: consumer demand for eco-friendly brands, brand owners’ responsibility to meet ESG goals, and increasingly strict regulatory requirements. Young consumers actively look for brands that align with environmental and social values, closely examining materials, manufacturing processes, and supply chain transparency.

Recent industry data reveals that approximately 28% of global licensing stakeholders view sustainable product innovation as a significant opportunity, representing nearly one-third of the industry, valued at $340 billion. Leading brand owners, including Disney, Mattel, Warner Bros., and Universal Music Group, have already integrated ESG goals into licensing operations, setting new standards.

Disney pioneered eco-friendly packaging, Mattel used recyclable toy materials, and Warner Bros. integrated circular design. Universal Music Group established ESG guidelines, BBC Studios reduced supply chain emissions and received POC recognition, while the Natural History Museum implemented strict environmental standards.

IMPLEMENTING SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES

Transitioning to sustainable licensing requires comprehensive strategies. Effective practices include thoroughly vetting manufacturing partners’ environmental credentials, reducing physical samples by using electronic approvals, incorporating biodegradable or recycled materials into packaging, and using third-party sustainability reports. Contracts are increasingly including specific sustainability requirements, ensuring accountability across supply chains.

Material innovation leads the way in transformation. Brands shift from virgin plastics to biodegradable, recycled, and reusable options. However, challenges remain: the biggest obstacle is cost. Sustainable materials and manufacturing often come with higher prices, which can raise consumer costs during tough economic times.

THE POC CONFERENCE: DRIVING TRANSFORMATION

The Products of Change Conference tomorrow, November 5th, at the Royal Geographical Society in London represents a crucial industry event. This year’s focus is on collaborative solutions, material innovations, circular design, and legislative updates. The conference supports the idea that 2025 is a key year for reaching sustainability goals and serves as a midpoint toward the EU’s Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.

The POC Sustainability Awards, now in their third year, celebrate outstanding achievements in sustainable change. Previous honorees from BBC Studios, the Natural History Museum, and leading entertainment companies demonstrate that sustainability excellence spans diverse sectors.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Despite enthusiasm for sustainable practices, the industry faces challenges. Yet, no universally standardized contract language exists for sustainability requirements across different product categories. Brands must navigate varying standards for fashion, food and beverage, household chemicals, and toys. The solution involves gradual, strategic integration—similar to phased electric vehicle mandates—rather than abrupt transitions that could destabilize supply chains.

Going forward, licensing contracts will include sustainability compliance checkpoints alongside traditional approvals. Sustainability non-compliance will become a contractual liability, with increased factory inspections, supply chain transparency verification, and sustainability labeling becoming standard requirements.

Sustainability in licensing is essential for industry viability—not just a passing trend. Brands that adopt sustainable practices early position themselves well for regulatory changes, shifting consumer demands, and long-term success. The POC Conference offers key insights and frameworks for guiding this vital transformation, helping to build a sustainable and prosperous future for the global licensing industry.
