In March 2026, a California jury found Meta and YouTube liable for causing a teenager’s addiction to social media, a landmark verdict that marks the first time a US court has assigned legal responsibility to a platform for the psychological harm its design choices inflicted on a minor. The jury’s findings were unambiguous: screens are not neutral, and the design of the software running on them carries moral and legal weight.
The ruling also indicts unsupervised, unstructured screen time, the kind designed to maximise platform engagement at the expense of the child. That distinction matters enormously for the educational gaming sector.
Well-designed games engage what neuroscientists call the dopaminergic reward pathway, the same system activated by curiosity, mastery, and social connection. When a child encounters a problem in a game, fails, adjusts, and succeeds, the brain registers that sequence as meaningful progress. Repetition in that context does not feel like drilling.
Homework, by contrast, asks children to perform skills in isolation, without feedback, without incentives, and without the social dimension that makes learning feel alive. The same child who drifts through thirty minutes of algorithmic video can spend that same thirty minutes navigating a standards-aligned STEM simulation with a parent and come away with something real.
