A Global Phenomenon, from Japan to the Rest of the World

This is a landmark moment for Spiralcute, the award-winning character and IP development company from Japan.

With the launch of its new Los Angeles-based arm, Spiralcute International, the business is entering an exciting new phase – bringing its much-loved, creator-led brands to wider audiences and opening fresh opportunities for partners worldwide.

Focused on identifying, nurturing and growing culturally resonant, creator-led brands, Spiralcute has built its reputation through an artist-first philosophy rooted in creativity, fandom and joy. The company works closely with creators to protect the authenticity and emotional connection that made their characters beloved in the first place, while building the partnerships and infrastructure needed for thoughtful international growth.

Its premium portfolio includes the hugely popular Chiikawa, Mofusand and Koupen Chan, each with a distinct personality, strong visual identity and deep emotional appeal.

One of Japan’s most successful contemporary character brands, Chiikawa has become a cultural phenomenon across Asia. Created by artist Nagano, the brand follows Chiikawa, Hachiware and Usagi as they navigate everyday life with courage, friendship and humour. Beneath the irresistible sweetness lies surprising emotional depth, reflecting the anxieties, small victories and quiet hopes of modern life. Fans don’t simply love Chiikawa – they feel seen by it.  Evolving from hugely popular web comics and bestselling manga into popular anime series, the brand continues to expand with the exciting launch of Chiikawa The Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island arriving in cinemas across Asia this Summer. This will be followed by the launch of a dedicated international YouTube channel this Fall, featuring localised anime content to connect with new audiences worldwide.

Mofusand, created by illustrator Juno, is one of Japan’s fastest-rising character brands. These irresistibly cute cats turn everyday moments into joyful adventures – whether doing simple cat things, dressing up in endlessly charming cosplay, or stepping into human-like scenarios such as working, travelling or shopping.  Its soft, sophisti-cute visual style, humour without words and endless collectability have made the brand universally shareable and instantly lovable. A proven hit across Asia, Mofusand has built a strong consumer products presence spanning plush, collectibles, apparel, accessories and lifestyle ranges, alongside standout collaborations and growing international demand.

Koupen Chan, created by illustrator Rurutea, is the adorable baby emperor penguin whose gentle encouragement and celebration of life’s smallest wins brings comfort, positivity and cheer to audiences of all ages. Its uplifting message, premium aesthetic and emotional warmth give the brand strong lifestyle appeal.

Built organically through social platforms, these community-driven brands have grown through genuine fan connection. Naturally expressive and highly visual, they translate beautifully across categories, becoming products that spark joy and fit seamlessly into fans’ daily lives. Plush and collectibles are a particular strength, alongside categories such as apparel, accessories, stationery, gifting, publishing, beauty, home and everyday lifestyle products.

Their success across Asia is already well established through retail, licensing and immersive experiences. From themed cafés and destination attractions such as Chiikawa Park in Tokyo to strong consumer products programmes and high-profile collaborations, the brands continue to deepen fan engagement in meaningful ways. Partnerships with UNIQLO, MINISO, CASETiFY, Starbucks, McDonalds and Sanrio demonstrate the broad cultural reach and collaborative appeal of the portfolio.

Now, Spiralcute is entering its next phase of international growth. A major milestone is its partnership with Jazwares as master toy partner (outside Asia), expanding global distribution and retail presence while preserving the integrity and charm of the original creations. Initial lines for Mofusand and Chiikawa launch this Fall, with Koupen Chan to follow from Spring ’27. Jazwares will also distribute authentic premium Japanese plush from GPS outside Asia, including ‘Kiramekko’ – a premium collection distinguished by its beautifully crafted, shimmering-eyed designs.

Alongside this, Spiralcute has appointed a best-in-class network of licensing agents across key territories and is actively progressing new category partnerships, collaborations and retail opportunities worldwide. Several exciting new partners are already on board across the portfolio, with further announcements to follow. With strong momentum building and standout opportunities still available, now is the perfect moment to start the conversation.

With a rich pipeline of future IP, Spiralcute is only just beginning its next chapter. Build on heart, humour and joy, its beloved brands continue to grow by staying close to fans who love them most.  With a thoughtful focus on warmth, authenticity and emotional connection, Spiralcute is creating enduring lifestyle franchises that resonate with both long-standing fans and new audiences.
