Sam & Julia’s Mouse Mansion and Rijksmuseum Join Forces for Unique Collaboration

The Mouse Mansion Company has announced a special collaboration with the Rijksmuseum. As part of the exhibition ‘At Home in the 17th Century’ (October 17, 2025 – January 11, 2026), the Mouse Mansion is part of the educational program.

Karina Schaapman, creator of the Mouse Mansion said:

“It’s a dream come true to be able to show my Mouse Mansion in the Rijksmuseum,” says Karina Schaapman, creator of the Mouse Mansion. “The 17th-century dollhouses of Petronella Oortman have been an inspiration for many miniaturists through the centuries. It’s a great honor that the Mouse Mansion can now also inspire children in the Rijksmuseum.”

Irma de Vries, Senior educator, Rijksmuseum added: “At the Rijksmuseum, we want children to learn by doing. That’s what makes our collaboration with The Mouse Mansion so much fun. Karina shows that you can make something new out of anything – from cardboard boxes to milk caps. It sparks creativity and imagination, and fuels curiosity. We hope that many families will soon start building their own ideal miniature worlds — just like Karina, and the Petronellas of the 17th century.”

Mouse Mansion displays in the museum

Visitors can admire several special Mouse Mansion displays in the Picknick room during the exhibition. The Sinterklaas house and the Christmas house are on display. Additionally, Karina Schaapman built several 17th-century scenes especially for the occasion, such as the Milkmaid Mouse. These unique creations form a bridge between the historical dollhouses from the collection and the contemporary miniature art of the Mouse Mansion.

Creative workshops for families

During weekends, families with children can create their own Mouse Mansion room in the museum. Inspired by the dollhouses of Petronella Oortman and The Mouse Mansion, visitors build their own little room complete with authentic Rijksmuseum wallpaper. Whether it becomes a chic interior or a cozy room with a woolly carpet – every child can let their creativity run free.

Exclusive Rijksmuseum Ruffle Mouse

Especially for this occasion, The Mouse Mansion Company is launching the Rijksmuseum Ruffle Mouse. This unique mouse wears a traditional 17th-century ruff collar and is exclusively available in the Rijksmuseum museum shop.
