The animated series Morphle and The Magic Pets, based on Moonbug’s YouTube shorts, debuts on Disney+ and Disney Jr on 20th March. LM caught up with Olivia Chausson, General Manager of Morphle, Moonbug Entertainment and Andy Yeatman, Managing Director of Americas and Originals, Moonbug Entertainment, to find out more.

How did your Morphle IP come about, and what are its characteristics?

Andy: Morphle started as a grassroots, 2D show on YouTube featuring the fantastical adventures of a young girl Mila and her magical pet Morphle who can transform into anything Mila imagines can save the day. Since Moonbug’s acquisition, Morphle has expanded into a popular franchise with content available across 35 platforms in 22 languages globally. We are incredibly excited to expand the audience with Disney in ways that will excite new and returning fans.

Olivia: Wish fulfillment is at the heart of the Morphle brand, tapping into children’s desire to be everyday heroes with magical companions, and leaning into the aspirational relationships between the kids and the pets. The world of Morphle is fantastical and fun, fuelled by the adventures of our young heroes. Kids are always in the lead, with the enduring power of friendship at the center of every story. Other core values of the series and the Morphle brand include confidence and creative problem-solving. We want to empower children to develop their can-do confidence and inspire them to find creative solutions to everyday problems through our stories.

On 20 March, the new series Morphle and the Magic Pets debuts on Disney + and Disney Junior. Can you tell us more about the new project?

Olivia: This new series dives deeper into our characters’ unique personalities and expands on the world of magic pets. We wanted to lean into the relationships between the main characters and their pets, as well as make the Morphle world itself even more fantastical and aspirational. Extended episodes gave us a chance to create heartfelt character moments and populate the world with an ever-expanding cast of adorable pets with magical powers. We are delighted to share Morphle and the Magic Pets with Disney families across the globe.

Andy: The Longer format of Morphle and the Magic Pets provides the opportunity to really expand the fantastical world of Morphle and deepen the storytelling. We worked closely with Disney to evolve the core characters’ look and feel in order to build a greater connection with the audience. The new Disney series also builds on the comedy which is at the heart of the original YouTube series.

In which countries will the new series be broadcast?

Andy: Morphle and The Magic Pets will debut first in the U.S., U.K. and Ireland on Disney+ on March 20th, with U.S. day and date linear distribution on Disney Junior.

In terms of licensing and merchandising, what are Morphle’s strongest product categories, and in which ones would you like to expand?

Olivia: We have big aspirations for the franchise, fueled by Morphle’s transformational powers and the richness of the magic pet universe. We see exciting opportunities to expand audience touchpoints and deepen fan engagement across the Morphle universe, which includes licensing and merchandising. We’ll be making exciting announcements about our licensing partners soon!
