First greenlights include: The Signal (Le Signal), Futuro Desierto (Desolate Future), Anywhere and Impact

Paramount+, the global streaming service from Paramount Global (NASDAQ: PARA, PARAA), announced a long-term slate partnership with Gaumont, the renowned global production company behind Lupin, Narcos, Barbarians and Stillwater, to produce several world-class international scripted originals, expanding the service’s pipeline to serve all types of audiences and to increase the robust content offering that’s available on Paramount+ around the world.

Gaumont will produce several originals in association with Paramount’s international studio, VIS, as part of Paramount+’s plan to greenlight 50 new international scripted originals in 2022. VIS will gain access to Gaumont’s vast network of renowned talent and creatives in key Paramount+ markets, including Latin America and Europe. As a result of the partnership, Paramount+ announced the following title, greenlit for production to premiere on Paramount+ internationally:

  • The Signal (Le Signal) (France) is a horror thriller based on the best-selling novel by Maxime Chattam and led by showrunner François Uzan (Lupin). After losing her beloved sister in a car accident, famous radio host Olivia Dormeuil moves to an old house on an isolated island with her family. But the change of scenery soon proves more challenging than expected when the family’s unspoken fears begin to take ghostly form and some inhabitants of the island start to die in strange circumstances. To unravel the mystery, the family will risk their lives to dive into the bowels of the island, into the heart of darkness, facing demons of the past that might be too scary, or too shameful, to confront.

Additionally, the following titles were announced as greenlit for development:

  • Futuro Desierto (Desolate Future) (Argentina): A near-future, dystopian thriller that turns on a robotics engineer who moves with his family to an isolated town in Patagonia where he is ordered to test the first humanoid robots in secret. Argentina’s preeminent writer-director Lucia Puenzo, whose notable film credits include the Cannes-selected XXY and The German Doctor, will co-showrun and direct multiple episodes with her brother, Nicolas Puenzo, co-director of Cromo and La Jauría.
  • Anywhere (Germany): In this dramedy with creator and screenwriter Jana Burbach (Bad Banks, Tribes of Europa), Toni Falk’s chameleon like hyper-flexibility skills help her in her career, but leave her lonely and lost, unable to form healthy relationships. After a casual lover declares his love for her, Toni is struck by a curse that transports her to different versions of her life. Now, she has to somehow find a way home, to wherever that may be.
  • Impact (France): Based on the best-selling novel by Olivier Norek, this thriller explores one man’s battle against the catastrophic ecological situation of our planet. After pollution killed his new born daughter, Virgil Solal, goes to war, alone, against giants, with his message soon finding echoes all over the globe in the form of a herd of masked supporters. Co-created by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade (Murder on a Sunday Morning, The Staircase), Antoine Lacomblez (Laetitia), and Severine Werba (Spiral).

“This long-term partnership with the storied and esteemed production company Gaumont is another example of our commitment to producing high-quality content that crosses borders and resonates with audiences worldwide,” said Raffaele Annecchino, Paramount’s President & CEO of International Networks, Studios and Streaming. “Our strong, multi-faceted and creative global content strategy combined with strategic investments and deep-rooted history of bringing compelling global and local hits to our audience sets Paramount+ up for continued success.

“We are excited to start a global relationship with Paramount+ and contribute to its international rollout with four new shows in Europe and Latin America,” commented Sidonie Dumas, CEO, Gaumont.

These originals will complement the 40 Gaumont projects, already in preparation or production across its six international offices (Paris, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, Koln and Rome) including Narcos season 6 (U.S.) Barbarian season 2 (Germany), Lupin season 2 (France), Damage (U.K.) for Netflix; El Presidente (U.S.) and Totem (France) for Amazon, Kaiser Karl (France) for Disney, and Stillwater (U.S.) for Apple.

The slate comes following the previously announced Paramount+ international scripted originals, including Sexy Beast, A Gentleman in Moscow, Simon Beckett’s Chemistry of Death, Los Enviados (The Envoys), Cecilia, Bosé, Miss Fallaci, At Midnight, and more, as well as a growing roster of previously announced and highly-anticipated global scripted series, including: Fatal Attraction, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Rabbit Hole and The Offer, in addition to popular titles from Paramount, such as Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, MTV Unplugged and South Park.

Paramount+ continues to expand its global footprint and is set to launch in the UK, South Korea, France, GSA and Italy in 2022. Outside of the United States, Paramount+ offers nearly 3,000 episodes of kids’ content, 1,000 episodes of reality, more than 500 films, and 2,500 hours of Paramount+ Originals, CBS and SHOWTIME® series, dramas, and sitcoms. The service has expanded its live sports offering outside the U.S. and Australia to include Central America and Mexico with the exclusive rights to the English Premier League.

The partnership was announced during Paramount’s President & CEO of International Networks, Studios and Streaming, Raffaele Annecchino’s Lille Dialogues keynote at Series Mania Forum.
