Barbie continues to celebrate its 60 years of history as a model of inspiration and empowerment for all the girls in the world
Barbie celebrates designer Alberta Ferretti as a new role model for women as part of her commitment to the Dream Gap Project.
Since March 9th, Mattel has been celebrating the 60th anniversary of Barbie, the world’s most famous fashion doll, which since 1959 has been the brand’s mission to inspire the infinite potential of every girl.
As Ruth Handler says: “What inspired me in the creation of Barbie was the desire that, through the doll, the girls could imagine that they were all they wanted.”
Since 1959, in fact, the mission of the brand is to value the infinite potential of girls so that they are aware that they can reach any goal. For its 60th anniversary, with a dedicated research program, Barbie has put the spotlight on the “Dream Gap”: the phenomenon that occurs in girls around the age of 5 and that leads them to lose confidence in their abilities. In fact, in spite of their male peers, around this age the girls stop believing they can undertake some careers. With the aim of increasing awareness and attention to the factors that currently cause this phenomenon, Barbie has launched the campaign #Close DreamGap in order to raise awareness of family, school and society on this issue.
To inspire the change, from 2015 globally and from 2018 in Italy, Barbie has created the “Shero” program, with which she is committed to helping girls believe in their talent and imagine everything they can be in their future, showing young girls around the world positive role models or Shero (as we called them): women of yesterday and today from different fields and backgrounds who have been able to break the mold. To some of these women is dedicated the highest recognition granted by the brand, a Barbie ONE OF A KIND, a doll in unique copy and with their features, in order to celebrate the role they played in raising awareness of the infinite possibilities available to girls around the world.
On the occasion of its 60th anniversary, the brand decided to celebrate the largest scale of women’s models globally, with the aim of inspiring the future generation of women.
In Italy, the celebrations began in March with star chef Rosanna Marziale, followed in April with Elisa, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music producer and in May with Sandra Savaglio, Astrophysicist. Now Barbie celebrates ALBERTA FERRETTI – established STILISTA known throughout the world.
Born in Cattolica, she began at a very young age to get passionate about fashion among the fabrics and fabrics in her mother’s boutique. Determined, creative and curious, Alberta Ferretti has believed in herself and her dreams since she was a child, and today she realizes them by becoming a synonym of style, femininity, elegance and sensuality. In 1980, with her brother Massimo Ferretti, she founded the company Aeffe S.p.A. and the following year she officially made her debut on the Milanese catwalks, inaugurating a career full of personal, stylistic and entrepreneurial awards. In just a few years, her success became planetary and countless celebrities chose to wear her iconic evening dresses for the most exclusive events, consecrating her as the queen of glamour. Alberta Ferretti is now one of the most important and representative names in Italian fashion in the world, interpreting the desire for beauty, charm and personality of women.
What does Alberta Ferretti suggest to girls who dream of becoming designers like you? “Since I was a child, I have always dreamt of being a big girl. I felt like I wanted more! And this is what I recommend to girls who want to enter the world of fashion: be brave, passionate, break the mold to pursue their dreams, and then they will have to be curious, observe what surrounds them and use all their creativity to transfer into sketches all that the world has to offer around them. The greatest satisfaction is seeing a dream come true, the design of a dress become real, ready to be worn.”
Thanks to her passion and determination, Alberta Ferretti is a source of inspiration for future generations of women, to whom she shows that if you really believe in yourself and your dreams, there are no goals that can not be achieved.
