Wonder was created by Palacio after an incident in her own life. She and her two sons, were waiting in line to buy ice cream. Her youngest son, only three years old, noticed a girl with facial abnormalities and started to cry. Fearing his reaction would hurt the girl’s feelings, she left the scene abruptly.
“I realized afterward that I had handled the situation terribly,” stated Palacio. “What I wished I had done was to turn the encounter into a teaching moment, showing my kids there was nothing to be afraid of. “It made me wonder what it must be like for that child, facing a world every day that doesn’t know how to face you back.”
Palacio started work on Wonder immediately after the incident. The inspirational story of 10-year old Auggie Pullman, takes readers through a journey faced with many difficulties as he attends private school for the first time after years of being homeschooled.
